A handy set of detail brushes
I use a lot of small detail brushes in my shop, so when I saw this kit of what appeared to be 9 high-quality brushes for under $11, I figured I give them a try.The kit contains three each of three different brush types, each with the same head and handle design. The body of the brush is plastic, with a over-all length of about 7 inches, The handle has a good shape that fits in my hand well and makes the brushes easy to control. The head has a double row of bristles just over 1-1/2 inches long, there is a smaller double row of just 4 protruding from the top of the brush for detail work. I found this combo-head was beneficial, the angled small top brush worked well for tight spaces.Having three different brush materials is very handy, the stainless steel brush is perfect for working on stainless steel without the worry of contamination, the brass brush is softer and less likely to scratch metal surfaces, the plastic bristles are stiffer than the metal ones, however, being plastic, they too will not contaminate stainless steel. My first project with these brushes was to rehab an old mechanical typewriter that was filthy from years of use and neglect. The keys on the typewriter, a SCM Galaxie Deluxe, were sticking, as was the carriage and ribbon mechanisms. I used primarily the plastic brush, which, combined with some alcohol and compressed air, did a good job of eliminating a lot of the crud that was gumming up the works. The brush held up extremely well, with no adverse effects from the alcohol. Having both a long brush and a small detail brush on the same handle functioned well. The brushes cleaned up easily, showing no wear from the project.I did notice the bristles on these vary slightly in length, this may be by design, as it makes the brushes a bit more aggressive than a brush where all the bristles are exactly the same length.Bottom-line: The handles on these brushes are very nice, comfortable, with a good fit. The brush heads get the job done. I have detail brushes for that have nicer bristles, however, they cost considerably more than these and have a single brush head, without the combo head of these brushes. These brushes are definitely a step-up from the typical discount tool store detail brushes while being similar in cost. Considering the quality and price, I feel these are a good value.
