It's so close to being great but it fails short in some key areas. Combat can be a little iffy, the controls sometimes don't respond, the "open zone" areas can be a little repetitive and dull, (and no real decent final area.) But my goodness it was a hella a lot of fun to play despite that. S ranked all the cyber stages, platinum trophied, the works. It's almost a return to form, just hope Sonic Team doesn't fudge the sequel!

Sonic Frontiers is a massive step in the right direction for a series that has fumbles with unnecessary new ideas in it's 3D outings. Sonic Frontiers brings many new ideas to the table but this time they are all great additions that compliment Sonic's signature speedy gameplay, rather than detract from it. The open, nonlinear, world works perfectly for the Sonic formula and the addition of a battle system is very welcome. The music spans various genres from melancholic piano to metal - all uses to great effect and all absolute bangers. Where the game stumbles is where every 3D game has stumbled; the lack of physics and the feeling of momentum building. In the original 2D games, speed was earned by an understanding of the games simulated physics and using geometry to build momentum and gain speed. This is an exhilarating experience and was the true reason these games became so popular. 3D Sonic has never really attempted this and Sonic Frontiers doesn't change that. Which is a huge shame because never before has a 3D game created a world so ripe for momentum based gameplay! In the next Sonic game I would like to see a greater focus on momentum based traversal and an environment which reflects that- more loops and more ramps. I'd like a more vibrant, hand made overworld to explore and a more robust battle system! I'm giving the game a 5 simply because of the potential it represents for a series I love and I do highly recommend it.

-Spoiler Free Review- It was such a breath of fresh air after a whole decade of not particularly enjoying any of the games and as a lore advocate I very much enjoy how well written and how impactful the story actually is. The way I felt when I heard characters that I've known for so long and have disliked their representations recently finally be who I fell in love with made me feel like a kid again. Gameplay wise the open zone is the best part of the game and I'm glad it is 'cause it's the biggest chunk of your playtime and the boss battles are impeccable, truly the best. Now for the cyberspace levels that had been teased as special stages, I don't particularly like them but I don't dislike them? Maybe it's just because it's reused level design and aesthetics even though it's explained by the story. Good thing those levels are mostly optional so by the end of the game I ended up ignoring them even though their music slapped, which brings me to my next point. THE OST IS SO GOOD, though not as good as my favourites (Unleashed/SA2) it's still definitely up there, then again Sonic music has always been great. Overall I'd give it a 8 out of 10, it's a great step forward and I hope they keep this formula while also polishing it. Sonic does feel better to control compared to past titles but it's still not perfect. During the cyberspace levels which are technically Forces style boost levels (though improved) he still feels weird to control and not as flowy as Unleashed or Generations, Colours even. In the open zone though? No problems, he controls just fine plus the combat. Bonus point - I think the enjoyment of this game scales higher if you know the whole lore of the series, when you play the game you'll know why I'm saying this.
