When I first bought a Thermapen 3, several years ago, I thought the price was a bit steep, but I knew it was highly regarded. Well, it was an invaluable tool in our kitchen, and was especially useful for roasts, reheated food and baking. When I found out about the Thermapen IR, I knew I had to buy it.The Thermapen IR improves on our previous Thermapen by having a rotating display (for ease of viewing) and a sleep function that saves the battery when you put it down on the counter in-between uses. But, the biggest difference is that they’ve managed to shoe-horn their high quality infrared thermometer into it as well, so you now have a choice of using the probe thermometer or just placing the Thermapen a few inches from the surface you want to measure and pressing the new side button. The latter results in an instant reading without having to touch the food. It’s a tiny bit less accurate, and it only measures the surface temperature, but it is a useful addition for taking lots of quick readings for stirred liquids, or in fact anything around the house that you point it at.The infrared thermometer by itself costs over £50 separately, so it’s a pretty good deal to have 2-in-1. Still not cheap, but if you’re a keen cook or baker, you may find yourself using it daily.Highly recommended.
