By David Herbert Donald - Lincoln (1st Touchstone Ed) Paperback

Wonderfully readable with many photographs included. I ordered this book used. It was listed as acceptable condition; however, my copy looked new except for one pencil notation. The print was too small for me, so I gifted this to a young reader.

This was requested as a gift and my son loved it. The condition was fine and acceptable.

The book arrived on time. Looked in great condition. I then did the little flip of the pages as we sometimes do. I noticed a lot of writing and highlighted sections from my guess was the previous owner. I am not mad just surprised. It actually made me laugh. Will see if I agree with the notes written in the book.

This is by far the best biography I have read of Lincoln, and possibly one of the best biographies in general. Donald's unique approach is to tell only the parts of the story that Lincoln himself was aware of. So little is said of the Confederate government, since Lincoln generally did not know what they were doing. He does not dwell on battles, but only explains how they came about and what their effects were. The story is centered entirely on Lincoln and all that he thought and experienced.Donald does a wonderful job tracing an already familiar story and telling it in a new and thoughtful way. He emphasizes the incredible stress and pressure that fell on Lincoln as president. The frustrations were immense, yet he retained an incredible degree of wisdom throughout. Donald shows that Lincoln made some poor decisions early on, but quickly learned how to manage his Cabinet, generals, and Congress.This book will leave the reader in awe at Lincoln's brilliance, for such a humble and unassuming man. Even those who already revere Lincoln will find cause to admire him even more. This book is not a hagiography, but it simply highlights the challenges Lincoln faced and the masterful way he met them.

As a devoted fan of Abraham Lincoln, I love books that give insights into his character and ability to make great decisions under extraordinary pressure. Donald does that in a concise, informative, and entertaining way. If you only read one book about Lincoln, this would be a good one. I highly recommend.

Lincoln is a meticulously researched and well written biography of the man, not the myth. Highly recommended.

Wow. What a book.As someone that is generally neither a fan of history nor politics, finding this book supremely enjoyable was unexpected. I would highly recommend it.
