My friend has a dog that needed this and her dog really likes it

I tried every renal care dog food out there. I subscribed to a platform that outlines home-cooked meals, which I did every day faithfully. I bought supplements and vitamins. My 15 y/o Chihuaua turned her nose up to it all. But not Purina Pro Plan Renal Care. My cooking vs Pro Plan and Pro Plan wins. Thank you, Purina. What a relief to know I'm doing the right thing and my dog is happy!

Arrived on time and the dog food is very fresh. As dogfood goes, it smelled good and strong which is great because my dog ate it. Prescription Kidney diet, I highly recommend for your picky pooch who needs a low protein, low phosphorus dry dogfood.

I was devastated when my vet told me my 15 year old Pom- was in Kidney failure-There had been no symptoms- Just her regular yearly check up- And that I had to change her diet- I read the reviews on several recommended-products- Decided to try this - believing TessMarie having been on science diet since she was 8 weeks old- Would never eat it- so, -I bought a small bag---wrong- she loves it- I wet it really good,(water) soaking over night in fridge-she loves her three times a day meal-- she is getting better test results- I highly recommend- I am a senior dog owner- not paid or prized for my comments- I hope every dog suffering with or with out symptoms and told to get a NF diet will at very least try this--

This food caused digestive problems for my dog the first time she ate it. She liked the flavor but within a few hours she was having problems. I soaked a handful of this food in water and several hours later, it still hadn't broke down. I'm under the impression that dog food for kidney disease should break down quickly in the dog's digestive system. I do not reccomend this product, wasted my money and bad for my dog.

My dog had high kidney values so I put him on this dog food and a couple other things I got from Amazon to help lower his kidney values and after a couple months it worked his kidney values were back to normal but he's not real crazy about this dog food but the vet recommended he stays on it. The last bag I got the kibbles look different. They look bigger than usual He doesn't like it at all now I'm not sure what's going on but I'm probably not going to give him anymore of it I just wasted $40 cuz you can't return it. Now I need to try to figure out what kibbles to give him now that's healthy and that he's going to enjoy eating it.

15 year old Maltese with advanced heart failure - needed very low sodium diet due to lasix medication. First low sodium food he hated because it was too hard to chew (he has several teeth missing at his age). Tried the dry NF food as an alternative and he likes the taste just fine but the size of the food is too big for his liking. He can break the kibble down with effort but after a few minutes I think it hurts his teeth and he gives up. I ended up cutting each piece of food in half for him so he would finish his 3/4 cup feeding. After months of this, I thought there has to be a better way so I tried the canned food thinking it would be of similar content. He likes the flavor and I mash up the dry with the canned and add a little water to create a "hash" if you will. He devours it but now I learn the canned ingredients are WAY different and by-product is the largest ingredient after water. I am really sad to learn this - it almost seems they should be sold under different labels and now I'm questioning the health benefit in total when you compare the two versions side by side. The best option would be to make a Dry NF in a small kibble size for small breeds. It feels like at the cost of this food that wouldn't be asking so much. I appreciate the product - at least the dry formula but it's still a struggle for small dog owner to deal with the situation. I don't doubt the dry food has helped him stay surprisingly strong despite his condition and heavy medication, but a little fine tuning of the canned product to use more reputable protein and some form of small bite dry food would probably find a much more appreciative customer and consumer base. After looking like we'd be lucky to get a month out of him he's heading into his 5th month with the condition (coughing as fluid builds up from heart failure) which requires the lasix that are hard on his kidneys so this food helps ease their work load. So I can't complain too much because he's still here and energetic and likes to eat again after being stubborn to eat even half his food with other low sodium foods. Side note - Nutro's Natural Choice® Small Breed Senior formula is a VERY small kibble size he loves to eat and it's barely over the sodium levels he is supposed to be restricted to. I wrote the company and they verified it's only 56g of sodium per 100kcal (the limit is 50g / 100kcal). So if you're looking for an alternative or custom blending some foods like I have - that's a solid choice and the contents they use are very appealing and it's a bit cheaper and easier to find. So I hope this helps everyone out there with your sick pups - good luck.

My dog has been eating this food for about a year. He seems to like it. Even better, his blood work showed his kidney function is almost back to normal! He recently had most of his teeth pulled (5 or 6 teeth left) and can no longer eat dry food. So I soak this food in water for several hours before each meal and he has happily continued to eat it. He won't eat the canned kidney food so I will continue to moisten this food, it is worth the extra step to know that he is healthy.
