Versatile little MIG welder.
The H HZXVOGEN MIG/ARC welder set arrived neatly packed into a plain cardboard box.In the set you get the main welding unit, a MIG gun, an ARC electrode clamp, an earth clamp, a combination wire brush/hammer, a spool of flux core MIG wire, 5 ARC welding rods and a short instruction manual. The main unit is nicely finished in a black powder coating with contrasting yellow graphics and has a handy hinged side panel for wire access, while settings are displayed on a large circular LED display on the front panel. The welder is a dual purpose unit and can function as an ARC welder using rods or as a MIG welder using spools of flux cored welding wire and has a useful operating current of 30 amps up to 140 amps.In use the unit performs well as a MIG welder, especially with the convenience of flux cored wire and not having to control any shielding gas, with a smooth and easily controllable wire feed.As an ARC welder the unit is possibly a bit underpowered for this type of welding but as long as you aren't trying to weld 1" thick plates and stick to a suitable thickness of metal, i.e. 2-3mm, the wleds produced are more than acceptable requiring very little cleanup. All in all, a very comprehensive welding set that will cope with most small welding tasks around the home workshop.

Good kit for basic welding needs.
This is a kit to get you started with gasless welding. For the pedants, no, this isn't a 'MIG' welder. MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas welding, and uses an Inert Gas to keep the weld free from impurities in the air. Instead of an awkward gas bottle, this machine uses a special wire with a flux in it, so it's more like the Manual Metal Arc (MMA) or 'Stick'' welding process. Because it continuously feeds the wire like a MIG welder, it tends to get called gasless MIG welding. The welding process does feel pretty much like MIG welding, and the end result looks like stick welding, with flux left around the joint. With that out of the way, What's in the box? Pretty much everything you need, including both a 'MIG'-style torch and a clamp for stick-style electrodes. You don't get any safety gear. I'm fine with that, as welding gear is very personal, and the stuff that you get with most starter sets can be pretty rubbish. I'd rather pay for the tools, and choose my own gear.So you'll need a welding mask and a pair of gloves. Ideally a leather apron unless you like the holy-jeans and burnt legs look. The machine is impressively small. Since it doesn't include all the gubbins, pipes and valves for the gas supply, it's much smaller then a MIG welder and the cable for the torch is more flexible too.I'm moderately competent at MIG welding, and have basic TIG skills, so I'm not a total beginner. However, it's been many years since I actually did any welding, so I approached this as if I was a beginner. It's actually not difficult. Practise on some scrap to get the right settings, and there's not really much to it. Just don't hold the parts together by hand! Like most jobs, the preparation makes all the difference. Cleanliness and accuracy before you turn the welder on will pay dividends.I probably wouldn't use this to assemble a motorbike frame or a bridge, but for fixing broken hinges, tacking bits together for my flight simulator rig, and mending garden furniture, it's great.

Everything you need (other than a helmet) to start MIG welding
The media could not be loaded. This is a review of the HZXVOGEN 140A gasless MIG, MMA and lift TIG welder. Please see the video for a more in-depth demonstration of its MIG capabilities. This is a tiny, light (less than 4KG) unit that can be carried anywhere. Given that it's gasless and provides both MIG and MMA this makes it an ideal back-of-the-van unit that can be wheeled out wherever you need to glue some metal together. This is my first experience of flux-core / aka gasless MIG welding (I have plenty experience of gas welding) and I have to say that I was really impressed. The "sizzle" wasn't quite there, and there was a lot of soot (see the video) but, honestly, for the saving in not having to cart around an Argon Light cylinder and the fact that it "just works", this really exceeded my expectations.I tried it on 3mm steel at around 70A and then 6mm steel at 120A and it breezed through it, producing way better results than I expected.I didn't test the MMA (arc) settings but have no doubt at all that this will be fine. Equally, I didn't test the TIG setting because, with the best will in the world, nobody is going to be trying gasless TIG with this machine. But let's return to what it does best: at up to 140A gasless MIG, with MMA as a backup, this is an incredibly versatile machine at a bargain price.Recommended.
