Quality Comic Compilation!
After buying the Fantagraphics collections of Donald Duck & Uncle Scrooge, I decided to venture into their other books. This collection of the first two volumes of Mickey Mouse are absolutely fantastic, the books have a heft and feel like they're meant to be read more than once, rather than simply be displayed on a shelf. Inside the binding we get the charming stories of Mickey Mouse and his friends. There is a palpable motion in each strip, and the story encourages you to turn the pages with equal speed. The quality is ever-present in this collection, and I plan on buying more!

An essential set at a great price
When it comes to books, Amazon is hands down the best place to buy them. They always have been. I paid $32.00 for this set; and it is worth every penny.1. I am currently building a set of high quality comics on my bookshelf. I used to read reprints of Mickey and Donald and Uncle Scrooge in the form of Gladstone comics when I was a child and I still enjoy reading them. Now that I have children of my own, I want to them to be able to enjoy the same stories I used to, and that my parents and grandparents probably enjoyed before me. Their interest has exceeded my expectations; anything that gets children interested in reading is a good thing.2. These comic strips are presented in their original format. So if you also grew up reading these reprinted in Gladstone comics, be aware that they are back in their original black and white, and are also daily newspaper size. If you are considering purchasing this set, I can't imagine this being an issue.3. Back when these stories were written, a story line would last months; and consequently, you are getting stories that easily take up 30 or so pages of this volume each. The daily strip format also makes for easy stop points when I'm reading to the children. It is great to see Mickey Mouse being mischevious, adventurous, spunky and clever; a welcome change from the sanitized non-offensive goody-two-shoes he has been marketed as in my lifetime to date.4. The drawings are simple and elegant and convey a wide range of emotions and expressions; It takes a good artist to get so much detail with so little pencils and a brevity of brushstrokes.5. This set has high quality stitched binding, durable white paper, and a very nice slipcase that fits behind my bookshelf doors without having to be turned up on end. There are also informative introductions to each major story arc, and interesting essays and photos in both the beginning and the end of this book. They are not for filler either; they add to the reading experience. These books are meant to be read again and again and again. So, these things said, this set is an essential one and is currently at an excellent price. I have already ordered the slipcased Volume 3&4.

I'm the guy they call little Mickey Mouse.
Taken together, these two books reprint the first four years of the Mickey Mouse daily comic strip. Floyd Gottfredson has been proclaimed the greatest Mickey Mouse comic strip (or comic book) artist, and rightly so. But the book also includes the strips from before Gottfredson took over the feature. These are good, but they can't hold a candle to good ol' Floyd. His Mickey Mouse is perhaps the greatest humorous adventure strip of all time. In addition to the comics, which are beautifully reproduced, there are a number of informative articles about the strip, plus a lot of archival material. Fantagraphics went all out on this one. Highly recommended.

anyone interested in old comics should love these
these books are great. the print quality, binding etc. are top notch. the comic strips are classic, i loved the squirrel nut zippers ghost of stephen foster video and this is the era. crazy creative, refreshingly non-PC, ( i want a t-shirt of the shot of Mickey walking around with a 6 shooter in his pants) early mickey is as sassy/bratty and gutsy as the early superman was. contemporary mickey and superman have been tamed down to zero's. these comics aren't just about the art, a lot of the humor translates well. the books are broken up into sections, mickey's on a mission, villains/ confrontation/ resolution, similar to the storytelling format carl barks used in ducktails. i hope these do well, and more volumes are printed!

Fight Compulsive Gambling!
When I was in my incorrigible years, I'd acquired a stack of dreadful comic books that my father abhorred but which I read over and over again. Believe it or not it caused me to become an avid reader to such a degree that today, aged 80, reading is one of my greatest pleasures. (No, not still comic books) Looking back, I think it was the entertainment value and the ease of reading comics that imbued me with a taste for books and made me look for something more gratifying to a developing mind. I was more fortunate that most because I could handle two languages, English & German, thanks to my parents. Now with two grand daughters, one that has learned to read and the younger one to whom she can read I gave them a sure-fire gift; this boxed set of Mickey Mouse. When the hysteria of the holidays gives way to the hum drum of existence in the months to come, I'm sure this set will provide some welcome relief from boredom to both urchins. Last Christmas it was the Complete Peanuts and I hear from their mother that is browsed constantly. If you want to lure your children away from the shallow, endless drivel being fed to them on the TV, get them one of these and get them started even if you have to read to them a bit yourself. Thinking about videogames? Forget it, there are some rumblings from academia that compulsive gamers become compulsive gamblers. If you're a compulsive gambler and think this is good, forget everything I've written above. Thanks.
