CompuLab4K Display Emulator (fit-Headless 4K)

These Fit-Headless products are great, I use several of them. But when ordering this one, it never got delivered, and no reason was given. Very disappointed

Great little device!Connected to my MacMini so that I no longer need to have a real Monitor into it, now I can access it through 'Back to my Mac' and it runs at full speed (MacMini only switches on the accelerated GPU when it thinks a monitor is connected, otherwise it noticeably slows down.)This little dongle works a treat, although it states it supports 30 resolutions, the Mac only recognises about 10 - some of them are really high and the icons get a bit too small to read however I found the optimum setting in my case was to use the 1080i preset in the apple display panel in the built in settings (no additional software required, however there are some utilities out there that 'unlock' the hidden resolutions as well)

Bought this to emulate high resolutions on a headless M1 Mac mini, but it only offers up to 1080. The device appears as "fitHeadless4k", but no 4K to be seen anywhere, even when using apps like EasyRes which show hidden resolution options. Waste of money.

I recently set up my old Mac mini as a server. I replaced it a few months ago with a Mac Pro, and wanted to muck around with OS X Server, taking advantage of some of its features, especially centralized Time Machine backups and software download and update caching.I set up the server, but, since I’m running it headless – with no attached display – I could only view it in one resolution using OS X’s screen sharing feature. If the Mac mini runs headless, the GPU, not detecting any display, doesn’t activate.There’s a way around this, however, and it’s pretty simple. I bought this CompuLab HDMI Plug with Remote Desktop Access. This dongle fits in the Mac mini’s HDMI port, and emulates the presence of a display. With this attached, there are a number of different resolutions, from 1360 x 768 to 4088 x 2304.I’ve chosen a low resolution, since running it at, say, 4K resolution makes it so tiny that I can’t do anything. The only downside to me is that all the resolutions are 16:9; I’d have preferred something with less width.This is a really simple solution to an annoying problem. If you’re running a headless OS X server, you should definitely get one of these. It will make your life a lot easier.

Is tiny and does exactly what it says, resolved the issue I had with my Intel NUC.Can't ask anything more of this really, great product for those wanting a headless device that otherwise wouldn't support it.For those interested I attached this to a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, due to the NUC having a mini-HDMI and not full size, which worked perfectly.

Perfect - used to 'enable' the GPU on my Mac Mini, which is used as a headless CCTV server. Reduced main CPU load and noticeably improved performance, as well as enabling all of the display modes for when I VNC into the machine. Great widget.

Works exactly as it should. I use it on a 'headless' Mac Mini, and screen-share that desktop onto my MacBook Pro.

OK, this thing is a total piece, and I'll be returning it immediately. This is just goofy market segmentation at its worst. These guys appear to sell three adapters: one for 1080p and below, one for up to 4k (this one) AND, this is the kicker, they produce a third adapter, the fit-headless gs. Now, as far as I can tell, this thing is just an edid chip on an hdmi plug. That's it.This particular adapter will, as advertised, go up to 4k resolution, no problem. What they fail to mention (and what I wish I'd seen in the reviews that mention it), is that this adapter will only go up to 15Hz refresh rate at 4k. Which, is pretty much pointless and useless. I'm not so much annoyed about that fact as I am that they don't bother to mention the refresh rate limitation anywhere in the product description. So, they charge at $5 price bumps for products that, so far as I can tell, are just differently-programmed edid chips in each of the three products, and they fail to actually explain the limitations of each. I'll change my review when they clearly state the limitations of the product on this page, until then, no go.And, if you're like me, and using this for a headless (sort of) gaming rig, and you need 4k@60Hz, you apparently need the fit-headless gs model, that one will (according to the manufacturer's website) do 4k@60Hz.

This is a pretty simple device with a pretty straightforward job, and it does that job pretty well. I have been using this adapter on my Mac Pro tower, which is set up as a server, and I have had no problems in the weeks I have been using it. In terms of resolution, it does support what it says, and you can check out the images I attached to see proof of that. My Mac had no issues recognizing the adapter and even pulling the proper name. The actual device you receive might be different than what is pictured in the actual product promotional images. Well made, solid, and works perfectly. I use this to activate the GPU on headless Mac minis to improve performance when accessing them remotely.

Plug and play baby - lets me log into a headless mac mini running os 10.6.8 via my 27-inch iMac and view at full resolution. Outstanding!
