Superman 1: The Unity Saga: Phantom Earth

Enjoyable read
My biggest complaint was issue #6 and the way bendis changed the narrative structure and how he just took supes out of the fight towards the end, I cant say I liked how he ended things. The villians motivations also arent clear. Other than that it was a pretty good read imo. Great art, and some cool scenes. There was a few deep moments and tbh I dont get the 1 or 2 star reviews. I think you would enjoy this more as a casual superman fan. I'm not big on continuity so I cant really see it from the perspective of reading superman for years and years although I've read things like "superman unchained", "birthright"and the "death of superman" arc. I think one of the problems is they ended the rebirth run too early and just threw bendis to the fire with yet another reboot. I never read the rebirth run so I cant comment on it, I will get to it though. Like I said, as a casual or maybe even a new reader of superman, I think you will definitely enjoy it. I'm looking forward to reading more and seeing how bendis develops the character. The dialogue wasnt too shabby either, although bendis seems to like tautologies.

Typical Bendis -Wait for it, Wait for it, Wait for it
Never read Superman so I don't come with a prejudice one way or the other, but I liked this. Full disclosure; I also am a huge Bendis fan and he's the only reason I even picked it up. You have to read Man of Steel first or you are just swinging in the wind here at the beginning and the end. In fact Bendis just leaves you hanging as a writing style so if you are liking your stuff short and neat you're going to hate Bendis. He builds and builds and twists and turns then circles back and frickin BAM there it is. It might take a year or two at least to make the journey but it's worth it.This book in particular is a great example. Lots of stuff going on and you really don't know what the deal is, so you just have to hang on for the ride. I'll admit Bendis threw in a couple corndog lines like "my pa taught me . .. " or "my ma said" and I almost threw up in my mouth, but Bendis will get there and I'm on board for both Action and this Superman. Start with Man of Steel.

Highly recommend
This first collected volume of Superman by Brian Michael Bendis met every expectation I had and exceeded them.I have always enjoyed Superman because he is absolute good personified (which ironically is the same reason some dislike him). But In a world with so much gray area it’s nice to read about a man who always does the right thing or at least wants to.Brian Bendis really captures that here. My favorite thing in this book is Superman describing how in a world full of terrible things he still, with his superhearing, listens to people helping one another. And he chooses to focus in on those things. What a beautiful reminder to seek good in people. This book just gave me the warm fuzzzies man, couldn’t recommend it enough

Exciting New Story
I enjoyed Jurgens’ & Tomasis run on Superman & Action Comics, but it never grabbed me. I then heard Bendis was coming to write both and, though I knew he was this Marvel comics legend, I could never quite get into their comics or trades, so I had a blank slate. That said, I enjoyed this book, vol 1 of Superman & vol 1 Action Comics. Definitely along for the ride, in it for the long haul, because I really enjoyed this book😊

Great art, not so great writing
I was a big fan of rebirth Superman and action comics both Dan and peter did an excellent job of adding new elements while bringing the pre-52 Superman back. I read bendis’ work with guardians of the galaxy and x-men and I did enjoy it, but I wasn’t a huge fan of him taking over both Superman titles. The titles dropped to once a month, Superman’s underwear came back, which I didn’t care for that much. It was said that bendis was going to embrace what came before however in his limited run he took away everything rebirth had built.Superman is better then action comics and I do enjoy the art. Superman has more action then action comics does. However there are many plot holes. Bendis does play the long game but in this volume it might leave you confused because it’s not tour typically six issue story. Everything seems to still be setting up. A lot of exposition.Bendis is still slated on the title for a while, however, I hope they change it soon.

A Decent Story with Many Lingering Plots
Although this comic has a lot of what Superman fans want don't expect a resolution by the end. Regardless, it is good to see Superman be a father, work with fellow heroes, and reunite with old foes.

Divertidinho
