My son has just started taking flying lessons. Is this something worthwhile to give him as a gift? Is this something he will eventually need?

My son is currently in flight school beginning a second career. This is something he shared with me about his experiences: Yes, many flight instruments already do the calculations done on an E6B. It is a helpful reduction of in-flight workload. Yes, the CX3 is more accurate and is allowed to be used on the FAA test. He owns one and uses it often. But do keep in mind that while pilots are very well trained and planes are well built, training has taught me that it is VERY important to be prepared for the worst possible outcome, because it CAN happen. It's not likely that your avionics fail AND you run out of batteries for your CX3 AND your iPad dies, but it COULD happen. An E6B is a fantastic backup you can always rely on, and an impressive piece of engineering besides. It is a great gift and a huge asset to have handy, even if it's not used often.

Does it have wind portion on the back?

On the wind side, colors are used to identify wind variation: blue identifies west (or right wind correction angle) and red identifies east (or left wind correction angle)
