Silence

The 2016 movie "Silence" of Liam Neeson, potraying a novice 17th century Portugese Catholic missionary in Japan (historical fiction), will certainly silence anyone who thinks their own spiritual life cannot be compromised through ancient Japanese torture, even O'Keefe's life or Simon Peter, the apostle's pre-Pentecost life. Hence, we pray in humility, "And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil". Watch this movie or read the book and you will be overcome with sadness & empathetic reverential respect for the realities of spiritual warfare & how God's power to redeem a non-compromising, compromised, repentent sinner is REAL, even for that thief's last moment on the cross.

Amazing novel contemplating the age old question: "Why in times of distress, sometimes God remains Silent." A great read for people of any religious views. Leaves you with a bunch to think about.

Ah, this is a wonderful book. I, also, am a priest and I found myself very conflicted about the main character. Like the real world, Rodrigues lives in the vestibule where good and evil meet and trying to sort out whether anyone is good or bad is a hard task. The racism was shocking but not too surprising for a 17th Century Jesuit-or any 17th Century European. At what point can we let go of what we believe? When should we allow our mentors and heroes to be human?

Years ago I read Shusaku Endo's awe-inspiring novel for a university-level Asian history class. When the film came out, I ordered an un-highlighted copy for my church library.

This book has challenged me to my very core. This is why stories matter. I highly recommend this book.

A moving story. A must read.

Set in early 17th century Japan, its story of cultural conflict and political oppression expressed in religious conformity seem very current. A serious examination of the difference between faith and belief, between compassion and orthodoxy, between the inner and outer expression of spiritual experience - especially the lack there of as experienced by Jesuit missionaries. The historical fact of this taking place during the same time as Galileo's trial and house arrest, although not spoken of, adds an interesting orthodoxy arch.

A wonderful read. Highly acclaimed and resonates.
