Substantially worse than the old DW03050 it replaces
I thought this model would be an improvement over the DW03050 model it replaces due to the larger fractions display and the on-screen history. However, in reality it's a pain to use.The old model was instantaneous going from reading to reading whenever you pushed the DIST button. This model has about a 2 second delay from when you push the DIST button to start the next measurement and when the laser beam appears. It's quite aggravating. I'll usually take 2 or 3 quick measurements from surface-to-surface at a few different points to get a good average, and this delay has made it so frustrating. Also, if you rotate the tool 90 degrees, the screen orientation changes, which is a nice plus, but there's about a 1/2 second delay where the screen goes blank to do that. The DIST button is smaller on this model and buried within other buttons, so there's a greater chance of accidentally hitting one of the other buttons when you're trying to take a measurement. This is an inexplicable design change. The displayed measurement tolerance is not adjustable. The old model measured to 1/16" (the stated precision of the tool). This one displays to 1/32" even though the DeWalt literature states that its precision is still 1/16". So what's the point of giving readings with 1/32" tolerance? I would be able to appreciate the large fraction display much more if it displayed a useful fraction (such as 1/8" or even 1/4").The only really good thing I can say that is improved over the last model is the battery access. The prior model made it difficult to get the battery cover removed; this one is quite simple (and still tool-less).I tested the accuracy with the old laser and a tape a few times and they all agreed on the measurement (to 1/16" tolerance), but there's a greater chance of error possible on this tool when mentally converting from 1/32" fractions.I'm going to try the Bosch laser measurers next time instead, which still have some of the same design problems, but are 15/32 of the price.
