Get you one
Picked up a new laptop unit for a good price. After unpacking it found that it did not have a disc player nor a place to install one. Researched and found this little external for a good price and ordered it. It arrived from the company in three days via regular USPS shipping, a very good turn around time. While waiting for it to arrive, read further reviews and found that it came with two USB leads (data and power). This was a bit disconsording since my laptop only had two USB ports. Well, when I connected it to the laptop, it was recognized just as an internal drive would have been. Ran it though the paces and it works fine, reads and plays movies, cd's, file cd's and also writes to disc without installing any other drvers. Also a very big plus is that it will work with only the data USB cord connected, no need for the power cord. Its looks and construction is very good. For the price of this unit why pay a couple of hundred dollars more for a laptop with a player installed. I would certainly buy another if needed

A TERRIFIC BUY
This little optical drive that I got for under $10 was plug in and worked! I am quite surprised at the quality of this GENERIC USB DVD WRITER. Its compact, fast and perfect for a laptop that had a DVD writer but was ruined by a Cleaning Disc. (ALERT make sure your cleaning discs are FOR LAPTOPS) I am using the burner now to take care of some backed up burns that needed to be done and it is quietly working on the side doing a fantastic job. Came with both power and USB cable plus mini disc with drivers but that was never needed as WIN7 found the drivers needed and it was up and running in 2 minutes flat. TERRIFIC BUY!

DID NOT WORK - AT FIRST: Problem and Solution
This drive didn't play discs at first. Was powering up fine and recognized by computer, just not playing disc. Then I found the solution: I went into my control panel and selected Device Manager then scrolled down to DVD/CD-ROM Drives, clicked to expand and right clicked on my DVD player then selected properties. Went to DVD Region settings. Selected correct region and clicked okay and that solved the problem. Default region was 2. I'm in the USA, so needed region 1. I have a feeling this may be the reason for some of the negative reviews. (Windows 10, Windows 10 DVD Player, Surface Pro 3)

Don't Purchase
I purchased this product for my netbook. I received it, it looked acceptable for a plain black mini external drive. Mine had two plugs needed to plug into the netbook, one for power and the other for performance. I plugged both in and the drive came up on "My Computer" but all the drive would do is click, click, click, and flash orange. While it was flashing orange and clicking, I couldn't even open the door to the drive to take out the disk. I had to use the eject option under my computer to get the thing to open. I turned the video disk over thinking maybe I had inserted the disk incorrectly and it did the same thing. I tried everything I could think of to ensure I was doing everything right to make it work, but it never did. It was very frustrating as I was needing it to go on a trip. I returned the item and got a refund, and that not being handled very well until I finally emailed the seller and told him I was going to leave him such negative feedback - that is when he contacted me about the problem. I ended up finding a wonderful mini external usb drive, made my Polaroid, clamshell in design with glossy black piano finish, very small and quite sturdier than this one. Anyway, the Polaroid drive worked terrific and made me happy. I purchased this mini Polaroid external drive at [...]. They have excellent products, support, and deals all the time. I use Amazon all the time for purchasing things and this product was the very first one that turned out to be a lemon. Maybe I was just an unlucky one to get one the didn't work right but there you have it, my experience with this product.

Not great, but not horrible either
I bought this dvd-rom after reading many reviews & looking at other items on Amazon. Most of the reviews were positive & the seller had a high rating so I took a chance. I'm not very computer literate so I wanted something easy to use without a bunch of steps & downloads. I own an HP-mini netbook & the discription said this unit was compatible. It arrived in a reasonable amount of time, although the USPS mailing package had a huge hole ripped though it (postal workers are hard on packages). Fortunately the product was contained in a sturdy box & wrapped so there was no damage. The problem came when I attempted to hook everything up. I assumed it would just start playing, & for the cd I tested it did. When I put in a dvd it did not play. I got an error message after install that there was a "compatibility problem". It directed me to search the 'net for troubleshooting or change my screen resolution. I did both & got nowhere. After tinkering with it for 30 minutes I was about to call it quits & return it. I remember reading a few comments that said you had to install VLC MEDIA PLAYER before it would work. I found the free download & voila! It worked. The picture & sound are good, but I'm not too thrilled with the quality of the actual unit. I guess for $25. I shouldn't expect much, but in reading some of the other reviews it sounds as if others received a higher quality unit & had a choice of colors. Mine has no brand name on it anywhere & is basic black (I had no choice in colors). It came with 2 USB cables an "instruction booklet" (laughable), & a cd-r disc (I have no idea what this disc is for). I'm not diasappointed with my purchase, but it was not what I was expecting. All in all, it does the job I bought it for so I can't really ask for much more.
