critical for written boards
imperative to read this before ABNS written boards, it's filled with the non-clinical minutiae that isn't useful for day-to-day practice and which we all therefore forget...

The neuroanatomy section of this book is better than Citow and is much easier to digest. Overall concise and hits all the important points.

Dense, less valuable in the modern era
This was highly and repeatedly recommended to me by one of our faculty for written board prep. I decided to buy it rather than Citow's prep book, which I heard from several colleagues is dense and difficult to read. However, I also found this book dense and difficult to read. There is a lot here that is valuable if you don't remember basic neuroscience topics, the type that you learned back in college but do not use in daily neurosurgical practice/residency. Reading the first few chapters of this felt like a nostalgia trip to my freshman and sophomore years of college taking basic courses for my neuroscience major. The text is in paragraph format rather than bullet points. It did not feel particularly high-yield, since it is pretty detailed on minutiae. After reading the first few chapters in entirety and glancing through a few others, I put this away and relied solely on question banks (CNS/ABNS Qbank modules) to study for the written board exam. Ended up scoring around the 90th percentile, so for me that strategy worked well. Your mileage may vary. Some people may find this book to be very helpful.

Definitive Neurological surgery board review
An excellent book for my residents to read, think, answer and read again.I would recommend the book to any resident in Neurological surgery as a supplement.More single best responses would be nice if it could be added in the next edition.

Passed my written board 10 years ago with a good score (~60th percentile) using this same version of the book. I assume it's still relevant; can't imagine much has changed regarding the basics presented in it. I read it a bit each night for a month, then went through it intensely for about a week before the test. I found it much easier to study than the bullet point format of Citow, but to each their own.
