Excellent for the autodidact dedicated person
The book doesn't come with the cd as mentioned in other reviews. The book takes you through the notes of the first three frets chord by chord. For each chord you have a set of exercises which you have to play well before moving forward. These exercises teach you how to read music and the notes as well. The difficulty grows progressively. The book doesn't contain tabs. The method focuses on a lot of practice and you need patience and hard work to evolve. All the exercises i've done so far (23) sound great and you get the feeling of playing even from the first chord. The cd starts later in the book and I do not know how useful it is. The book works well for an autodidact person even with no previous music playing experience. Compared to the 'for dummies' method, I find it to be more organized and professional. Overall, it is an excellent method but bear in mind that the book without constant hard work doesn't take you anywhere.

I'd never considered reading music
Just wanted to strum a few tunes for pleasure but my guitar tutor suggested that this was the best approach. He recommended this book and we're working through it together. It's clear and simple to follow even for a complete beginner like me. I suspect that someone with a little more natural talent than I have would be able to successfully work through this book alone. Would recommend it.

Great book if you have the time and patience to give to it.
I have the first issue of this book and really like it, but it's falling apart with use. This edition is more or less the same as far as I can tell so far, however some of the style of print has changed and I find it slightly more difficult to read. It's not a major problem, just mildly irritating as I preferred the original. The content of the book itself, I really like. To teach yourself classical guitar from a book is not the easiest thing in the world to do, but Fredrick Noad has made a great job of a difficult task.

Learning my first musical instrument and learning how to read music at 46 is quite the challenge - I've tried other books previously, but they seemed to jump forward too quickly for my comprehension; this book is a step by step by step approach - practice practice practice, turn the page...I've heard that from beginner to end of book is about 2yrs? For these old hands, seems about right. My only beef is that the CD starts at page 49 - from then on it's awesome to actually hear what it is your are attempting to play - before page 49....I hope it sounds right!! My advice would be to not get too hung up on completing every lesson in each chapter - some of the pieces sounded so awful from my hands that I couldn't continue to practice them - but sometime later when I did a loop back, I found that my subsequent practice on later material meant the earlier stuff was easily accomplished. my second piece of advice - don't give up. oh and make sure you get the book that has the CD with it!!
