Bumf 1: I Buggered The Kaiser (BUMF GN)

I like Joe Sacco's work. I was expecting a little more satire in this title, but it gets pretty mean and downright paranoid in parts. The art is great, and there are one or two jaw dropping pages just dripping with detail, but the subject matter is pretty serious. Overall a great book. Just remember. Not all funny books are funny.

I don't' know...I think I did too many drugs in 1968...In fact, I know I did. Still, I can't quite figure out whether Bumf reflects the fact that Joe Sacco was there, too, and just can't let go, or he was too young to have been there, and is needlessly replaying a certain kind of head comic, sort of like S. Clay Wilson, but with an R. Crumb edge (without Crumb's humor). Anyway, this made me sort of queasy the way an S. Clay Wilson "Grand Panorama" did at 5 a.m. when the speed was wearing off and smoking another joint was probably a bad idea. Sacco can do much better. Try "The Great War."

I have loved every other Joe Sacco book I have read, which are all works of journalistic hard work, insight and, often, courage - 5-stars ratings across the board, most notably Safe Area Goražde, which first drew my attention. But this was just AWFUL. I threw it in the trash as soon as I finished reading it. I have to say I can’t believe that the impetus for this book came from Joe Sacco himself. More likely he was pushed to churn out something quick and dirty to satisfy some contractual obligation or other.

The phrase - "inspired lunacy" - is a tired one but it describes this perfectly. And Sacco's art is as good as ever.

Sacco's serious journalism is great. But it's wonderful to see his satirical and lyrical side (a la YAHOO) return.

Historically accurate. Highly reflective. (Not to mention reflexive.) Plus also, a cute yellow birdie for the kids!

Joe Sacco is the best! And the book arrived at my house in mint condition.

Joe Sacco has been doing down to earth work for many, many years. Don't ignore him!!
