Replacing the battery in this thing is so monumentally stupid that it deserves the worst rating regardless of whether it can actually detect studs.

I don't know why there are only poor reviews for this product. I bought this at a home improvement store and used it for several months before buying one on Amazon for a friend. It works great, just place it on a part of the wall where you think there is no stud, press the button, and slide it slowly. The red light will tell you when you found the stud.Something to keep in mind, it doesn't work 100% of the time. If it gets confused, you are often either on a stud or too close to an electrical wire. Move the device to a different starting point and try again and it will behave itself. I have only used this in houses with modern drywall construction, and I don't know how it would preform with older houses.

Often won't provide results due to metal in the wall. Not particularly user friendly - have a hard time locating many studs using normal OR deep scan. Just ok. There have to be better ones out there, though.

well after I bought this at OSH, a friend told me about these reviews. I tried it and it seems to work like it's supposed to. I recommend the utube video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P33HRjGHFy0I think this is probably a newer model and with so few reviews it might be premature to judge it a loser.But I must admit if I'd have read the reviews first, I would have bought one of the 4* ratings unit, as there are several in the same price range.

This thing is terrible. Sure it never misses a stud, but sometimes it's hard to find the stud with it as well with all the false readings it gives. I have now resorted to just knocking on the wall and listening for the difference to find studs, it's far more accurate. Yes I know to put it on a spot of the wall and turn it on so I can calibrate then move it slowly, but even then it gives a lot of false positive readings. Maybe in a new home it would be fine, but an older homes with layers of paint and thicker drywall it really doesn't cut it.

I own this product and I've always found it picky to use. It gives quite a few bad signals and sometimes makes it hard to know where studs are. All the times I used it, it was on walls with single layer of Gyproc and many times with textured walls. Tonight, after reading the Amazon reviews and the comments from Zircon to use a piece of thin cardboard and slide the stud finder on the piece instead of the textured wall, I had hope that this unit would work well. It ends up that placing a cardboard eliminates pretty much every jerk you experience with textured wall, but I still get the same amount of bad signals. Today got even more frustrating, there's 4 places where studs were identified and upon drilling, I ended up with no studs. After inspection, the stud started where I drilled. So it detected a stud at least 1/2" to the left or to the right. When trying to drill a hole in the middle of the stud, you end up hitting either the end of the stud or just gyproc with no stud. And I confirmed these studs with this stud finder many times at different heights because of the amount of bad signals but still ended up hitting the wrong spot. I've never had the problem of hitting beside a stud before tonight and I used to get the stud quite constantly, but only after reconfirming the stud location many many times to rule bad signals. I just never feel I can trust it. I've had a very good habit of looking at Amazon's reviews before buying anything, but since I bought this one at Home Depot and didn't have reviews then, I'm stuck with it.

I bought this and I, am fully satisfied. It works wel, it is easy to use and meets my expectations.

Can't open the battery compartment. Returning this piece of junk.
