Amores (Loeb Classical Library) Review: Excellent - I made recordings of Ovid I find them very compelling. I found Catullus to be the better early Roman period evocative poet. My recordings are authoritative and definitive. I record as the Emperor Kenyon Lucius Aurelius Augustus. I have made definitive recordings of the entire Latin catalogue. I read only in the perspective of the “Eternal Emperor Lucius Augustus.” I interpret the texts as if they are composed or addressed to Augustus. As if Augustus composed them. I find Gallus Caesar and Domitia Caesar to be the most honest writers of the “Late Roman Period” (the Dominate and “Late Antiquity” post conversion). Amongst the religious authors, DESCARTES is ascendant, then Galileo (get the style) ERASMUS, and Augustine the summit of Latin (religious) writing. The writings of Augustus in Africa are intelligent. Prior to that Caesar is the best linguist in Latin. Read Cataline and Petronius to understand the civil conflict and Livy to understand the resolution. Most other Latin authors are orders below this. All classicists agree. The Emperor KENYON LUCIUS AUGUSTUS (The edition pictured here my personal copy is considered *lost* pending the return of the stolen volume to me). Review: I love the Loeb editions - I like their portability and durability. The Heroides especially were a model for Medieval and Renaissance literature

Excellent introductory essay and very helpful in research on Roman love elegy. It is also Ovid and I recommend his poetry for one who thinks that old authors are stuffy. Read all the Ovid possible and you will find the beginnings of western style eroticism. OK, read Plautus too.

Have always loved Ovid.
Read part of Heroides back at school from the library. It is generally light-hearted, some times hilarious and occasionally heart-wrenching. Want to have a copy of my own. Have always loved Ovid.

Fine
Then you won't ever get a review from me again. Not like it helps me nor others out. Thanks for nothing.

We used to keep these under our desks when it came to prep. God bless the Loeb classical library! It saved many a boy from the irascible Fr McPherson and his basilisk glare. The text is good, and the english gloss is helpful to one who wishes to revisit old familiar haunts.

Fantastic to have the Latin and the English on facing pages

A beautifully presented dual-text prose translation of the verse original. The English is a little dated, and not 'literal', but with its help I was able to follow the Latin quite well.

Not up to the standards of Loeb. The reprint has smudged and wonky text - too dark and too small. It looks like it was photographically reproduced for this 1977 2nd edition this obviously isn't the 1989 edition advertised. Yes perfect size and beautifully bound but I'm going to have to physically go into a bookshop in future with Loebs because of this because they obviously vary in quality depending on the edition! The scanned copy of the original print on archive.org is much, much clearer but I don't like reading on screens. Blackwells were the suppliers so back it goes.
