Electrical Engineer's Guide to Passing the Power PE Exam - Spiral Bound Version (Spiral-bound) Ring-bound – January 1, 2018

Great book to prepare for the PE exam .I highly recommend this along with Complex Imaginary Practice Problem Book (4 volume set).Use the Graffeo book for concepts and theory and use Complex Imaginary to practice problems for the PE exam .Also make sure to buy the NCEES practice sample exams -- the key to passing the Power PE exam is to practice doing problems .Refer to theory/concepts as needed but always focus on doing 5 min problems utilizing those concepts .For a good textbook to study in depth for the PE exam, I recommend the Electric Machines and Drives book by Wildi .Be sure to bring the NEC book with you (2008/2011/2014).Another reference is Electrical PE Review Manual by Chelapati .The problems in Chelapti's book are much tougher than PE exam and take multiple steps . I would use it as another good reference for the exam . Buy this one if you absolutely need to .To recap, here is books/things I recommend bringing to and did take to PE(listed in order of importance -- I only used the top 6 during the actual PE exam ) :1>Electrical Engineer's Guide to PE (Graffeo)2> CASIO fx-115ES Plus(Become very familiar how to do complex numbers on this calculator and to convert from polar to rectangular and vice versa)3>Binder full of cheat sheets and formulaes and math problems worked out by hand .4> NEC Code book5> NCEES Sample Exam6> Electrical Machines and Drives (Wildi)7> Complex Imaginary Book All Volumes8> NJATC Code Calculations (helpful for motor and transformer calculations)9> Electrical PE Reference Manual (Chelapati)Also do some basic reading on lighting calculations and engineering economics . The Complex Imaginary book has plenty of problems.The way I did it was to make sure I covered at least one problem and took down all formulas for each of the topics/sub topics listed by NCEES for the Power PE exam .Leave me a thumbs up if you like this review and it helped you pass .Update : 12/27/2015Alex,I would like to say that your Guide helped me pass the Electrical Power PE this October 2015 on the first try .Your book is very concise and to the point and relates directly to the PE exam topics as posted by NCEES .I mainly used your book as reference for the exam and was able to quickly locate formulas and calculations required during the exam.Of particular use was the formula sheets that you had in your book ---no time wasted looking for equations during the exam .All the equations in this book were important and very useful during the PE exam .For all test takers, I would buy Alexander Graffeo's book , NEC Handbookand NCEES practice exam .Lot of time is wasted using the wrong resources in preparation for and during the PE exam.Key to passing PE exam is practice doing 6 minute problems -- exactly the types illustrated in Graffeo's book .Thanks !>

Short Review: This is a great starter book to get you acquainted with the study material for the PE Power exam. It covers most of the topics broadly and should be one of your go-to study materials.Long Review:A little background about myself. Prior to passing the PE, I had an M.S. in Electrical Engineering with a focus in Power and had a decade of power engineering experience. However, my education and study areas are perhaps different from a traditional power engineer who works at utilities. I, therefore, did not know more than 90% of the curriculum to take the test. The Graffeo book (along with the NCEES PE Sample Exam) gives you the foundational knowledge of the broad scope of materials needed and get you reasonably acquainted with the concepts covered in the PE Power exam.I strongly urge you to get Graffeo's PE Primer book as well which contains an additional 3 full-length exams. They are a must and are extremely helpful in aiding your understanding of the concepts. THIS book, really gives you a refresher. The actual PE exams can trick you if you don't know the concept really well. So merely going over the material in the study guide will not be sufficient. Practicing as many problems as possible to really drill the concepts is key to solving this exam. Therefore, I recommend buying the PE Primer Exam book along with this study guide.Some cons about the book:- Several little typographic errors. They are easy to spot and fix and won't detract from your study too much.- Usually, there is only one example of each type of problem. It teaches you the concepts but you may find that a little trick in the question that will throw you off. It is a must to find as many problems outside of the study guide to drill and make sure you understand the concepts.- Weak on preparing you for the NEC/NESC and other code sections.Some pros:- One of only two good study guides for the PE Power Exam.- When accompanied by the PE Primer, really helps you drill the concepts.- The reference textbooks that the author recommends are really great. I have bought the bold ones.- The author actually responds to e-mails and is very open to feedback. I was able to ask him questions over e-mail and received responses as well. He even took screen captures and answered my questions.
