Good unit while it works, but...
EDIT: A decent 5oz lock, until it eventually stops working / releasing.I had one of these quit on me before, but I had forced that one when locking up (see below). My bad.I bought another one in Nov 2020, and used it repeatedly without a hitch, always testing it before using it. Today, as usual, I tested it before I locked up my bike, everything was fine, so I locked up, but then I could not unlock it - the release button did not have any effect.Never again.********I like that this lock is easy to carry (small, lightweight at ~4 ozs) and the cable is long enough to lock my bike frame and front wheel to a rack / sign post, or lock two bikes together. All locks can be defeated, but this one is enough to deter the opportunistic thief.I got good service out of it for a while, but just had it crap out on me. I was having trouble getting the cable end to lock into place in the body of the unit until I forced it. Mistake. Should have tested that without having the cable thru the bike frame, because I was unable to unlock it (the release button on the side seems to have been the problem). Got some big, two-handed cable cutters to free the bike, altho it took several tries to slice thru, as they were actually too big and the cable too small and it kind of wedged in the gap between the two cutting surfaces. Later I found a small Park Tool cutter went thru the cable easily.Still, now I know better (don't force it to lock), and just ordered another one because it is a very convenient pocket-sized lock to carry for quick stops or where I am close enough to keep an eye on the bike.

Great for specific uses
I bought this lock after looking around for two specific uses: 1) when I bike long distances and want to travel light and 2) when I do errands. I travel everywhere by bike, and I love this lock when I need to leave my bike for very short periods. It is not a security lock and will not deter any serious thief; however, it prevents someone just taking the bike because it's there and available. I also find that it's excellent when I use bike sharing bikes for the same uses. Features:- Size and weight; it fits into a fanny pack easily and is light; I love this- Cable length; 3 feet enables you to go through the frame, front wheel, and a sign or rack; I wouldn't buy any shorter. This locks design is ingenious because the cable retracts. HowEVER, mine got stuck at about 2 feet (a foot was in the lock; it wouldn't fully extend) for a couple weeks. I figured it had just gotten twisted and lodged against the case or something, but nothing I did worked. Finally I just pulled harder, and that worked.- Combination/instructions; easy to use. The design of the wheels is good from a tactile perspective; I can use it with glove liners, which is great in winter.- Lock/unlock; here is its weakness. For the last several months, I've had issues with this. The fit of the cable end and the lock seems a bit loose, and it was very difficult to push it in so it would click closed. I oiled it and have never used the lock roughly. About a week ago, I discovered that, unlike before my troubles when it worked fine in every circumstance, it would click closed easily if I had the combination showing. Previously, it would click closed regardless of the numbers showing. Once I'd discovered this, it was easy to use again; I'd click it closed and twirl the wheels. LAST NIGHT was the last straw; it refused to unlock. I dinked around with it about 15 minutes and couldn't think what to do. Finally I pressed the unlock button against the frame of the bike firmly, and that opened it. Today I opened a support ticket with Kryptonite. In summary, I gave it 4 stars because it's excellent at what it does. I don't know if the quality is poor or whether I got a lemon, but at the price, it's still worth it. I'd gladly pay more for better quality. Its quality is sufficient as is. If you have one with locking/unlocking issues, open the support ticket right away; don't try to work through it as I did; I am grateful I didn't have to end up cutting it.

Kryptonite R2 does the job
The Kryptonite R2 is a low-security lock which helps to deter pilferage. It is compact and easy to use. I use it to secure my bike when I stop for a meal or go into a shop for a short while. If you require a high-security lock to secure your belongings, this is not the lock for you.Minor cosmetic difference between the lock pictured on Amazon and the actual lock delivered (See uploaded photo).Follow instructions carefully when resetting the combination, to avoid setting the wrong set of numbers - retract cable fully, push the reset pin and then push the cable end backwards INTO the lock, before resetting the numbers.Trek used to have a retractable cable lock that slides onto a small plastic bracket that attaches to the bottom of the bike’s bottle cage, but this is no longer available. The Kryptonite R2 is identical to the Trek H2O Cage Lock, except for a couple of minor cosmetic differences. The bottom of the Kryptonite R2 has a grooved recess that attaches to the Trek bottle cage bracket (see uploaded photo). If you are looking for a replacement for the Trek lock, the R2 will do the job for you.

Touchy dials
The dials are easy to move and create a problem for yourself when you fist set the code. I dialed in my 4 digit code, and set things. Two of the dials moved unbeknownst to me. I locked the mechanism, setting the code and was unable to use my code to open it. After about 30 minutes I stumbled on the right code by accident. I discovered that two of the dials jumped one digit up during the original lock setting. I reset it carefully and have had no problem since. The company Kryptonite, of whom I wrote to NEVER responded. Crap customer service.
