You will need some form of interface between the speakers and the PC, if he wants a quick connection studio monitors won't be the way to go, but they will be the best sounding speakers he can get.

Q: Do these speakers require an amplifier, or is a USB interface alone enough?

Hello, The T5V is an Active speaker so has an amplifier built in. You can simply connect your Audio Interface's Line Output to the input of the speaker and not need to connect via an external amp. Best regards, Jay // Focusrite Group Technical Support Engineer
