Acclaimed filmmaker Niki Caro brings the epic tale of China's legendary warrior to life in Disney's MULAN, in which a fearless young woman risks everything out of love for her family and her country to become one of the greatest warriors China has ever known. When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful national and a proud father.

An extremely well done movie of virtue!
This is by far the best of Mulan movies!! The combination of beautiful cinematography, the out standing music , especially the closing song at the end of the movie, exceptional acting performed by the cast, the underlying theme of virtue through out the movie, and the powerful director’s achievement of bringing these “ qualities “ together make this movie a must watch! How refreshing to watch a movie that moves the heart as well as giving us, especially the westerners, a glimpse into the integrity and nobility of the eastern culture! This movie is a masterpiece because in it honor ability matters! Well done!!! Loyal, Brave, Truth, and Family!!!!

Why I enjoyed this movie
I bought this movie despite all the bad reviews I saw and I'll tell you why. I don't buy a movie because of where it was filmed. Yes, I wish they had chosen some place in China other than where they did. But, frankly I don't care. They also filmed in Australia. I don't care that it wasn't exactly like the cartoon. Really? You wanted a live, mouthy, little, red dragon? You wanted the 3 male characters to be just like in the cartoon version? They were more believable in this one. Her romantic interest wasn't the son of the general and their leader? Don't care. She had a younger sister instead of the dog. Ok. So? They did her makeup for going to see the matchmaker different from the cartoon version. Don't care. There was no cricket insect in this one. One of the men was named Cricket. Still don't care. I didn't want a geographically correct biography. I'd have bought a National Geographic movie for that.I bought this movie for the live action. And there was a lot! Yes. They used wires, stunt doubles, and green screens. All action movies do. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely! Did I like watching her kick butt? Absolutely! I also bought it for the little bit of romance and fantasy. Mostly, I bought it for fun and entertainment. Did I like the addition of the witch with the good back story? It wasn't important in my decision for buying it. Did I like the ending? Sort of. They left it open for a sequel. But, I don't think they should make another one! Some of the cartoon movies should not, in my opinion, be made into "real life" movies. This one was a good choice though. Brave and the Little Mermaid? I doubt I'll watch those. I like the cartoon versions better. Two things people wanted to complain about. Catapults. They should do their research. 1. Catapults were invented in Greece in the early to mid century BC in the medieval period. The Huns united by 430 AD and "could" have accessed catapults, but it is unknown factually if they did or not. The use of the catapult, in my opinion, was just using literary license to make the story better. Did it? Maybe. I didn't care.2. The character of Mulan....it has never been proven that she was an actual person. The name first appeared around 400 AD in an anonymous written Ballad or poem handed down through the years. It became very popular and inspirational and over the years and it was historians who decided she did not exist. It's only in recent years the historical thoughts have been questioned. She was supposed to have served in the Emperor's Guard for 12 years after this movie takes place. Again. No proof of a real living person....not yet anyway. A poem... a ballad...yes. And even some Mulan statues. Do I care? No. I just wanted to watch the movie.Do yourself a favor and you and the kids watch it for fun and entertainment!

EXCELLENT ACTION MOVIE STANDS ON ITS OWN MERIT
I don't know what all the resistance is by the low rating of this movie but it is a really good movie! It stands on its own merit. I like the fact it didn't have an animated cricket or little red dragon bringing down the reality of the show.Sure there is a little bit of supernatural leaping and flipping and sword wielding but that is expected of this kind of movie. Although the legend of Mulan comes out of China, there is an overall tone of good will overcome evil throughout. And therefore, it also speaks of Christian undertones. The Phoenix for example is like that of the Holy Spirit. And Mulan seems to be gifted with certain spirit attributes that she has to recognize and work with. Those spiritual gifts are weakened when there is sin or untruth present. The moral value transcends and crosses all cultural differences and gives us a lesson in faith, moral values, and truth. The love of country and family is also present. So while this movie may have Chinese culture overtones, it is definitely a movie for all humanity. The extras are amazing. To look at the work, The labor, The many months of physical training and dieting, And the grueling schedule it took to put this production together is nothing less than a miracle in itself. The battle scenes on the plains are amazing, reminding me a little bit of the movie Exodu. Lots of action and warfare pageantry. Although the movie starts off a little bit comical, outlandish, it picks up a reality check throughout. The end however gets a bit supernatural as well And of course Mulan finally gets her vindication and redemption. The bottom line is righteousness will prevail and good will triumph over evil. For me, My heart was in the right place for this movie. I give it five stars all the way around.

Enjoyed.... but liked the animated version better
For a live action movie based from an animated movie, this one holds up pretty well. The storyline is familiar enough (to the animated version) for the audience to understand what is going on. Although critics definitely tried to nit-pick it apart, the movie performs well. I must admit that I found the animated version more entertaining. Nevertheless, this too is NOT a bad movie. It is at least an action movie that you can watch with the kiddos because the fight scenes are not brutal or gory.
