The MFJ-986 is a Differential-T Tuner that uses a differential capacitor that makes tuning easier than ever. It gives minimum SWR at only one setting. Broadband coverage ends constant re-tuning. The MFJ-986 is a rugged roller inductor antenna tuner that handles 3KW PEP SSB amplifier input power (1500 Watts PEP SSB OUTPUT power). It tunes 1.8 - 30 MHz continuously, including MARS and WARC bands. MFJ's exclusive AirCore Roller Inductor gives absolute minimum SWR -- something tapped inductors just can't do. 3-digit turns counter plus a spinner knob gives precise inductance control so you can quickly retune your frequency. A lighted peak and average reading Cross-Needle meter shows SWR, forward and reflected power at a single glance! The MFJ-1312D power supply or MFJ-5513 cable is required for 12VDC that is needed for metering circuitry.

Poor assembly, be ready to do some work on it or ship it back
Arrived damaged like others have said, broken diff cap shaft, loose nuts, loose screws, spring floating around in the bottom of the unit(still not sure what that goes too). But even after all that I was able to bend everything back into shape, tighten everything up, and patch the broken plastic shaft. This is my second one I have now so it really came as no surprise to me, first one was almost the same way but I fixed it up and its been working great for years. Hopefully this one will live too :)

Check them out before connecting them. The screws and bolts are tight and every thing is connected.
I have got three of these and all three have give me trouble I ordered the four one from Gigaparts thru amazon and it works very good.

Excellent Product
I read a lot of reviews on this unit. I am happy they clued me into what I was about to find (spot on) so it's not random). And even though the tuner works perfectly, as designed... I can only give three stars for lack of quality in the build process and final acceptance. Loose hardware in the case rattling around during unboxing. Screws and nuts not tight, backed off. MFJ really needs a quality control process to support the amount money they charge for their product. I do like it.

Needs to be repaired
Well i recieved the antenna tuner in a non descript box with no instruction manual. Not to worried about the manual as it fan still be downloaded on the MFJ website. As soon as i picked up the tuner that was shrink wrapped in plastic and heard hardware rolling around in the metal case. No worries. I can open it up and put the part back in its proper space and check all the other hardware . I remove the lid and see a nut has fallen off the screw. I then notice the case cover is dented and the variable air capacitor is shifted out of place and the plasric axle that connects the air capacitor with the adjustment dial is broken. Hmm. No damage to the packaging or the cardboard box. So now it seems that the unit was damaged and they still packed up to be shipped of to some person who was completely unaware. Shame on them! Now i have to try to get replacement parts or get a refund. This erks me to no end. No wonder MFJ is going out of business. PS. Electrically the unit is good but not usable without a way to change the capacitance.
