A Decent Enough Beginners Board
I ordered this for my eldest grandson who has outgrown his old bodyboard. It looks like about the right size, he’s 6ft tall and the board should come up around waist/belly button height for the right size.I have a good knowledge of body-boards and these are my thoughts on this board:This is what I would describe as an entry level or beginner bodyboard.Having a expanded polystyrene core (EPS) this makes it stiff but lightweight so ideal for diving onto broken waves and riding them to the beach. It should offer good buoyancy and a reasonable amount of flex. These type of boards are ideal for first time users tackling their first waves. It has a crescent tail which offers more edge control. It also has sloped front and sides (rails) which should aid lift over the water. The deck is PE (polyethylene) which offers decent flex. Higher grade boards use PP (polypropylene). As a result this over time this will no doubt suffer indentations and creases, but I would expect that from a budget board. The bottom skin or slick as it's known uses HDPE which is high density polyethylene, More expensive boards use “Surlyn” a rubberised material that helps board maintain their shape over time and ride better, but to be fair again I would expect to see HDPE on a budget board .Its not too wide at 18 inches it should allow tighter harder turns and manoeuvres. The sides or “rails” look like they are 60/40 % which is fairly common, it basically means that s that 40% of the sloped side connects to the deck whereas 60% of the side (rail) is in more contact with the water. This style of rail is better for maintaining control on bigger, more powerful waves and is traditionally the most common option particularly for beginners as already mentioned. The ankle leash looks reasonably strong with velcro closure and the standard coiled leash. In summary, looking at it , it looks decently constructed with plenty of stiffness but lightweight at the same time. For a beginners budget board, not too bad. At the its at the current price. (£27.19 at the time of the review) it's about ball park what I would expect to pay .There are cheaper and there are dearer ones available. Obviously only time and use will tell if it's properly put together but it looks decent enough for the price in my opinion.
