Not hard rock but ffs it was the 80's not the 70's so within that context a great album
Always liked this album despite bad press / reviews Loving the Alien is amazing as is Blue Jean and another unsung track that I love is Tumble and Twirl if you prefer his heavy rock 70's music this might not be your favourite and that fair enough but taken on its own merit and considering the era it stand out as one of the best albums from 1985, I made up an 80 min cd compilation from this era for listening to in my car I used tracks from bowie soundtracks and collaborations' from the same era when listened to together they could almost all be the one extended album try it ! it puts a new perspective on this era when listened to together here is my track list and in my opinion when put together this was far from an artistic washout period that was yet to come with the worst bowie album ever 'never let me down'Loving the Alien, Don't Look Down, Absolute Beginners, God Only Knows, Dancing With The Big Boys, This Is Not America, As The World Falls Down, Tonight, Labyrinth (opening titles), Underground, Neighbourhood Threat, Chilly Down, Blue Jean, I Keep Forgetting, Magic Dance, Tumble and Twirl, Within You. of course you don't need to put them in that order but together this a great body of work all written and recorded around 84/85, I purchased all this music legitimately!!

Tonight
David Bowie's 1984 album "Tonight", is a good enough album. This album is tring to follow the success which "Let's Dance" did back in 1983. This album includes the singles "Blue Jean", "Tonight" & "Loving The Alien".I will rate each track and explain why:-1. Loving The Alien 10/10 - This is such a GREAT FANTASTIC SONG! A great start to this album. The song has a great guitar solo at the end of the song, which makes you look forward to the end.2. Don't Look Down 9/10 - This song is alright i suppose, it isn't the best song on the album. This song sounds a bit of reggae, i think anyways. The song is worth listening to though.3. God Only Knows 10/10 - A cover version from the Beach Boys back in 1966. This song is really good i think. Its worth a listen!4. Tonight (Featuring Tina Turner) 9/10 - This song is not bad, i actually think its better then "Don't Look Down", the tune to this song is really good, and its worth listening to.5. Neighborhood Threat 10/10 - This song is just AWESOME! This song is just great, the lyrics are good and is just so fast paced. The chorus soon gets ou jiggling about! Worth a listen to.6. Blue Jean 10/10 - This song is really good, its got good lyrics. The tune is good, and its worth the listen.7. Tumble And Twirl 9/10 - I'm not so keen on this song, it sounds good, but i like listening to it time to time, but no the weakest song though on the album.8. I Keep Forgettin' 8/10 - This song isn't to bad, the song is really hard to want to like. The song seems so boring all the way through, but after a few listens all the way through, you start to like it just ta bit.9. Dancing With The Big Boys (Featuring Iggy Pop) 10/10 - This is a great ending to the album. The song is just great and the chorus is just fantastic, this is the song to listen to. Got something to look forward to when coming to the end of the album. In conclusion, this album isn't as good as "Let's Dance", but it has its good songs. I Think this album is very underrated, and yeah it isn't his best stuff, but it still something great to listen to. The one thing which is disappointing is the fact it sounds rushed and that he took all the songs he wrote with Iggy Pop, and chucked in this album, to make up the tracks, but other then that a good album. I would recommend this album if you collect David Bowie's albums, but don't buy this album, if its your first time listening to his, go for some of this 70s albums and then work your way up.

Better Than Most people Think
This album is far better than most people give it credit for. My favourite songs are 'Loving The Alien', Tonight', 'I Keep Forgettin' and 'Blue Jean'. But most of the songs are really enjoyable. I always find a Bowie song for any mood I am in and I adore the variety. I am happy to have this album in my collection.

‘Tonight’ has not aged particularly well
I remember a record shop window in the autumn of 1984 (in Coventry). It displayed 12” album sleeves for ‘Camouflage’ (Rod Stewart), ‘Big Bam Boom’ (Hall & Oates) and ‘Tonight’ by David Bowie.Although I liked ‘Tonight’ (and the single ‘Blue Jean’) at the time, I am more critical of it now. David sings in an occasionally harsh crooning style. His lead vocal on ‘Loving the alien’ (7:09) is starting to grate on me now. The cover of ‘God only knows’ (the Beach Boys) is inessential.Thankfully, a more mellow performance on the reggae track ‘Don’t look down’ shows the artist at his best. Written with Iggy Pop, the latter feels more like a co-write with Bob Marley. The songs from Iggy's seventies release ‘Lust for life’ (Tonight, Neighborhood threat) and compositions by other writers suggests a shortage of new material (or ‘writers block?’).Tina Turner was busy singing duets with rock royalty in the eighties. As well as performing on David’s ‘Tonight’ single, she sang on ‘Its only love’ (Bryan Adams) and ‘Tearing us apart’ (Eric Clapton). Two songs were performed with Mick Jagger at 1985’s Live Aid event. The producers Arif Mardin (Scritti Politti, Thereza Bazar) and Derek Bramble (Jaki Graham) are included in the personnel. Listening with headphones may aid your appreciation of the synthesizer arrangements and backing vocals. In remastered form, ‘Tonight’ has probably lost some of its original impact. If I remember correctly, a Disky label copy of this 1999 reissue offered superior sound. Some would say the artist’s best work ended with ‘Scary Monsters’ in 1980 (despite the commercial success of the single and album ‘Let’s Dance’ in 1983).
