A great compilation for a very poor year.
This three disc DVD is a compilation of the best moments from a year of Smackdown. It covers a year starting in October 2009 and ending in September 2010. At the beginning of each month we get a highlight package of the best of that month followed by whatever matches and moments they included for that month. It's hosted by Matt Striker and Todd Grisham as they sit at their commentary table.John Cena, Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Undertaker vs. Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, Cody Rhodes and CM Punk - Before this match we see a video promo from the Rock on Smackdown's 10th anniversary. The match, from later the same night, is advertised as the biggest 8-Man Tag Team match in Smackdown history and I can't really argue with that. It was a good match with solid action. Cena's team were dominant for quite a while until their opponents managed to isolate Shawn Michaels and later John Cena. The match lasted for a good amount of time and it led to a strong and decisive finish. A really enjoyable match to kick off the DVD.CM Punk vs. Undertaker - This was for the World Heavyweight Championship and it was a submission match. It was the anaconda vice vs. the hell's gate. There was some story going in that had Teddy Long and referee, Scott Armstrong reluctantly working for Punk. That did play a role in the match unfortunately. The action was good although it was fairly short considering it was a main event between these two men. Undertaker was pretty dominant but Punk took advantage of the stipulation to stay in the fight. It had a good, clean and decisive finish and was enjoyable overall but it could have done with more time.John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler - This was a Two out of Three Falls match for the Intercontinental Championship. This was a good, fast paced match. Despite the fact it was a three fall match it was a fairly quick match. The action was constantly entertaining. Ziggler controlled a lot of the action and managed to hurt the mid-section of Morrison which he then targeted for the rest of the match. Morrison was fighting from underneath for most of the match but he came back with enough to keep it competitive. The falls were good and there were some convincing near-falls as they built towards a strong and decisive finish. A short but very good match.Mickie James vs. Natalya vs. Beth Phoenix - This Triple Threat match was to find the Number One Contender for the Women's Championship. It was another short match but it was enjoyable while it lasted. It was probably due to the length but they managed to avoid the two in, one out formula for Triple Threat matches. The action was nothing special but it was entertaining enough and it had a good, decisive finish. After the match there was a decent brawl between Mickie James and LayCool and the return of Maria.Undertaker vs. Rey Mysterio - From the Christmas episode of Smackdown, this was for the World Heavyweight Championship. It was a really good match. Mysterio started off surprisingly well, using his quickness to get the better of the Undertaker. Undertaker soon cut him off though and controlled a lot of the rest of the match. The action was really good and Mysterio's fast paced, desperate comebacks were great. It had a disappointing finish that really made me want to see a full match between these two. Thankfully we got that at the Royal Rumble.Rey Mysterio vs. Batista - This was a Steel Cage match to find the Number One Contender for the World Heavyweight Championship for the Royal Rumble. It's another good match. Batista controls most of the action, dominating Mysterio. Rey was just desperately trying to come back just enough to manage to escape. The psychology of Batista's dominance and Mysterio knowing he was only going to win by escaping was good. The finish was good too and while it could have done with a few extra minutes, it was an enjoyable match. Disc one is closed out with a great CM Punk promo where his Straight Edge Society save Serena.John Morrison vs. R-Truth vs. Dolph Ziggler - Before this Triple Threat Money in the Bank qualifier we see Edge return to Smackdown with the Cutting Edge right after winning the 2010 Royal Rumble. His guest was meant to be Undertaker but he got Jericho and CM Punk as well and it turned into a brawl. It was a decent segment. The match was another good one that kept up a fast pace. The action was entertaining from start to finish. It had a good amount of time and there were several near-falls as the match went on. It all led to a decent, decisive finish and was a very enjoyable match overall.Edge vs. The Miz - This was another good match. Miz controlled a surprising amount of the action considering this was before he got as good as he is today. Edge made a comeback eventually and then the action went back and forth with some strong reversals. It gets a decent amount of time and has a good, clean finish. A pretty enjoyable match. After this match we get CM Punk's fantastic 'Happy birthday princess Aalyah' promo. It's a pretty amazing promo and definitely one of the year's highlights, as were most of the things Punk did.Undertaker vs. Drew McIntyre - This was unfortunately not the competitive match that I was hoping it would be. It's almost a complete squash match and that sucked as I feel they could have had a really good, competitive match together. I'd love to see them have a rematch now that Drew's a big deal. It was really short so wasn't exactly bad, it was just disappointing as it could have been so much more than it was.Kane, Dolph Ziggler, Matt Hardy, Shelton Benjamin and Drew McIntyre(Smackdown) vs. MVP, Jack Swagger, Christian, Evan Bourne and Kofi Kingston(RAW) - This was a RAW vs. Smackdown match between the members of Wrestlemania 26's Money in the Bank Ladder match. It's a good, back and forth tag match. It doesn't quite have the excitement that the opening eight-person tag match had but it was still good. It had plenty of entertaining action and some strong teamwork for the most part. It lasted for a good amount of time and kept up a fast pace. The action broke down towards the end and became more chaotic as it built up to it's strong and decisive finish. It was a fun match.Jack Swagger vs. Edge vs. Chris Jericho - This was a Triple Threat match for the World Heavyweight Championship. Before it starts we see Swagger cashing in his Money in the Bank contract shortly after Wrestlemania. The Triple Threat was a very good match. The action had a good pace and was entertaining throughout. There were some good reversals, near-falls and last second saves as the match went on. Jericho and Edge seemed to want to just get Swagger out of the way so they could fight each other a lot of the time with Swagger just trying to stay in the match. Everyone worked hard and there was a decisive finish. A very good match. This is followed by an Edge and Christian reunion to close out disc two.Beth Phoenix vs. LayCool - This Handicap match was for the WWE Women's Championship. There was no tagging in or out needed for LayCool. McCool manages to hurt Beth's knee which she uses to get an advantage on Beth while Layla just does what she can to help. The match lasted barely any time but I still enjoyed watching it. It could have done with more time but it was entertaining and I guess it was memorable enough to make the DVD.Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk - This was a very good back and forth match. The action was fast paced and exciting. These two have great chemistry together so all there matches end up being good. There are some good reversals and some good near-falls as the match went on. It had a disappointing ending but that can't take away from how entertaining this match was before that ending happened. I wish it could have been longer with a different finish but I enjoyed what we got.Battle Royal - Next is this Battle Royal to find the final participant in the Fatal Four-Way World Heavyweight Championship match at the Fatal Four-Way pay-per-view. This match led to Smackdown's story-line of the summer so I understand it's inclusion but for the most part it's just standard battle royal action. It's not particularly exciting and some might find it boring. I wouldn't go that far but the action certainly wasn't memorable. It got more interesting when it was down to the final four and had a decent finish. It was harmless battle royal action.Matt Hardy vs. Drew McIntyre - This was a very good, back and forth match. McIntyre worked on Hardy's back early on but then changed to attacking his head, which he had apparently hurt on a previous episode of Smackdown. Drew McIntyre was the aggressive new-comer while Hardy was the veteran who wouldn't give up. Matt's reversals, trying to come back, came at just the right times and it had a good, decisive finish. I was surprised by this match as it ended up being one of the better matches of the DVD.Rey Mysterio and Big Show vs. 'Dashing' Cody Rhodes and Jack Swagger - This was another good match. Mysterio was doing most of the work for his team. He started off strong but eventually got cut off and worked over. Big Show was in for a bit but Swagger went after his injured ankle which made him unable to do much and he tagged right out again. It was an enjoyable match overall. The finish wasn't great but it worked and made Swagger look like a threat. It had a good amount of time and the action was entertaining.Christian vs. Drew McIntyre - Before this match we see a promo from Kane from after he won the World Heavyweight title. It was in the time where he would have music playing while he was talking in the ring. It was another very good match from McIntyre. The action was strong throughout, Drew used the ring apron to hurt Christian's shoulder and then aggressively went after it for the rest of the match. The psychology was really good as Drew was consistent with his attack and, even when making his comeback, the injured arm was affecting everything Christian did. It had a good, decisive finish and was another highlight of the DVD.Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger - This was a No Disqualification match. It was a fun match. They did their usual thing inside the ring with some strong action before they went to the outside. They ended up brawling through the crowd and out of the building. It was mostly controlled by Swagger who just threw Mysterio into everything he could see. By the end they'd fought across a road and one of them ended up going into the river. It wasn't much of a wrestling match and not what we normally get from these two but it was fun and memorable.Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler - This was for the WWE Intercontinental Championship. These two have faced each other so many times but they always have really good chemistry together and deliver fun matches. This was another good one. The action was strong with Kofi starting off strong for a while before Dolph took over. It had a good amount of time and a good, decisive finish. It wasn't one of their better matches but it was still a pretty good match. There's a good aftermath too where Kofi Kingston snaps.Rey Mysterio vs. Alberto Del Rio - This was Alberto Del Rio's WWE debut. It was a really good debut. It had good psychology as Del Rio viciously went after Mysterio's arm to set up for his cross-armbreaker submission hold. Mysterio managed to keep the match competitive though with his speed advantage. It had a good amount of time and a really strong and decisive finish. It was a really impressive debut by Del Rio. It was even more so at the time when we hadn't seen what he could do before but it was still a very good first match looking back at it now. He felt like a star.Kaval vs. Drew McIntyre - For people who don't remember Kaval's short WWE run he's the man more commonly known as Low-Ki. I was kind of expecting a squash match with Drew dominating but we actually ended up with a pretty competitive match. Kaval managed to control a lot of the action with his fast pace and athletic strikes. It was an enjoyable match that could have been even better with more time. It was entertaining and had a strong finish but I would have liked to have seen more.Undertaker vs. CM Punk - The compilation ends with this match. Punk sent his Straight Edge Society to the back for this one. It was a more competitive match than the one that opened this DVD. The action was good, Punk managed to take advantage of a mistake by Undertaker and controlled a lot of the action but Undertaker was still the Undertaker so he came back with his destructive offence. They went back and forth and there were some good near-falls. I wasn't a big fan of the finish but it was strong and decisive so there's at least that. It was a good match to close out the DVD.As I remember, 2009-2010 was one of the worst years for WWE. Both their television shows and their pay-per-view events were at their worst. That made this a surprisingly good DVD as they managed to collect a load of entertaining matches and moments and made a pretty poor year look like a lot of fun. It was a very fun DVD overall and one I'd definitely recommend. There are plenty of enjoyable matches included and while none of them are 'must see' they're still well worth a watch if this set interests you.
