Good kit but not for beginners
I have seen one or two reviews of these DW Piper Cubs that were obviously written by non modellers who just did not understand what they were buying.First let me give my qualification for this review.I have been designing and building models for many years. I bought this kit while suffering from “designer’s block”These kits are NOT for the total novice, they need quite a lot of experience. You get sheets of plywood and balsa wood with a set of parts cut with some of the finest laser cutting that I have ever seen. These parts fit amazingly well. Again, just about the best that I have seen. You get some basic hardware such as pushrods and control fittings and an undercarriage with some screws. Also some plastic windows and a moulded plastic cowl. The instructions consist of three double sided sheets, One has a diagram of the parts with their numbers on them to help you identify the parts in the sheets. You also get four sides of photos of the construction with brief notes. You have to do some quite serious study to work out exactly what has to be done, not always easy. There are quite a few areas which need some experience. For example, the battery hatch does not have any hinge and retaining catch. Not a problem...I keep those as standard items,The wing joining seems to have been designed by one person but he didn’t tell the person doing the instructions. As shown the ply joiner goes through a huge hole in the ribs. It needs a slot cut between the spars where it fits perfectly and does the job it is meant to do.There is no indication of where the model should balance, a vital piece of information. The proper place is 1 ¾” (44mm) back from the front of the wing. There are no suggestions as to control throws and I still have to do some fine adjustments to get the model to my liking.SO HOW DOES IT FLYWell I admit that I used a more powerful motor than the one suggested because I like to throw the model round a bit.I only had one flight because it was cold and I was out “Taking exercise” in the Corona lockdown. The model flies well. IT takes off from short grass (I must fit bigger wheels) and it is reasonably stable. It does very nice loops but I still have to adjust the aileron throws to get it to roll well.At one stage I was flying in loose formation with a Red Kite who often comes over to look at our modelsThe glide is nice and the landing is steady. I am looking forward to more flying with it when the lockdown is over. The novice on his own will be in trouble very quickly but with some help from an experienced modeller they should soon master the flying. Now I may have sounded critical in this review and as far as the novice is concerned I am critical but as far as a kit for the experienced modeller it is very good and I would be happy to build and fly some of the companies more aerobatic subjects.I confess that I did not buy the kit from Amazon but from a novice who had taken one look and wisely sold it on.
