Don't buy Chinese made unions, use SharkBite instead
Couldn't get the seat to stop leaking. Played around with the alignment, tried thread tape and sealant on the face, eventually resoldered and put in shark bite unions which I'll do from now on. Not the first time I've had this exact issue with this size/brand. I've always used this type of fitting for quick disassembly and no need to change pipe position to get complicated sections apart but from now on I'll make room in the design to use the extra long shark bites that can slide back and forth. They ended up in the scrap bin, waste of money!

Maybe I got the unlucky one, but mine leaked and needed RTV sealant on the mating surfaces.
I have installed all types of plumbing unions for many years, although I am not a Pro, just an advanced homeowner. This is the first one I ever installed that had a leak, although extremely slight within the union itself. I had 2 6 inch stubs already soldered in to the union before i put the assembly in place. I had the union snugged up just a touch more than hand tight to make sure the alignment was correct before placing the assembly in and sweat soldering it into place. The union leaked like a drop every 30 seconds or so even though it was tightened sufficiently. Before I even went to use the union at all, I had looked at the parts to make sure the finishes of the mating parts looked good, and they did. I drained the system, used some Permatex RTV gasket maker according to the package instructions and let it cure for 24 hours before letting water into the system again, and it was fine. I would have given it 5 stars otherwise because it looks very well made, but I cannot. Maybe mine was defective, but it looked fine without using any instruments.

Just what I needed works great. The trick to these is not to tighten too much and make sure they line up well and you won't have leaks.

Light weight, fine thread
It is lightweight with a fine thread. It seems that I often use unions in awkward places or the two sides are not perfectly aligned until the union is snug. It is easy to cross thread with the fine threads which I managed to do. I now have a coupler rather than a union.
