My first two degrees are in Geology. This book is superbly done.
The writing is clear and age-appropriate for most kids 10 and up. Heck, it's a great intro even for non-scientist adults. Helpful, clear illustrations. The only things I would have added are how SHALLOW the oceans actually are, and how low the loftiest mountains, compared to Earth. If Earth is a ball 3 metres in diameter [about 10 ft], the average depth of the oceans is the same as a human hair, as is the height of the Rocky Mountains. The deepest ocean trench and the highest peak are only three hairs on that 10-ft ball. Similarly, the Mid-Ocean Ridges spread at about 3 centimetres per year [1 1/4 in], which is the same rate as our fingernails grow.Read the book with your kid(s). You'll each learn some very neat stuff, and now you've got some cool trivia to add. Delightful value at the price, especially if you're learning together with the kid(s), which is even more valuable than anything specific to geology.

My 7 year old grandson loves picking up rocks when we hike. Now he can identify certain rocks.
I like to get my grandkids interested in things other than media games

Great book and experiments
So enjoyed how this book introduces young readers into the many areas of geology. So glad the author included experiments to try at home that spark more interest.

4th grader I got it for is gonna love it...
This book walks a kid through all the terminology related to the Earth, and how it formed, and has some fun experiments, a cloud in a jar, using starburst candies to create rocks, several projects that, with an adults supervision, kids can "see" things that happen in nature. The book has a nice layout, is easy to understand, with plenty of pictures, both graphics, and photographs.Near the very back of the book is a rock guide, it is brief, and does not dive into the diversity of rocks as much as I was hoping, or would have liked... but this book is more focused on the broader aspects of geology, and how the earth formed/ what makes up the Earth. If your kid is into specific rocks/rock formations... this may not be the right book.
