Perfect for my low-flow needs!
Ok, I just installed it and will probably have to update this, but right now I'm so happy! When I first put it in, I couldn't get it to work. I took it out, looked through all the parts, foxed with it but didn't make any real changes. (Maybe it was put together a little tighter.) Reinstalled it and it started right up.I don't use filter cartridges. I just put in some media from my last filter and added some new filter floss on top. Between that and setting it to a low flow, I got the flow perfect for my betta.I didn't love the way it tilted on my tank, so folded a paper towel and wedged it under the back. That's my only issue and it was easily solved.

Quiet, great for bedroom aquariums
Just bought this for my first time 5.5 gallon Betta tank, if you made the mistake like me and bought a super loud filter (almost 90 db) for a tank in your bedroom and need a quiet filter this is your filter.Extremely easy to setup, lets you control level of flow as well, would definitely recommend this if you’re looking to get started

Great little filter
This is the bomb of HOBs. Works so much better than my other HOBs that don't self prime. Can't say enough good about it, completely silent and the spillway is pretty long so the return gets onto the surface eliminating the noise. Great little filter. Has the filter media it came with and a pouch of purigen, water is crystal...lovin it! Well worth the little extra expense!

Can’t go wrong with $12 and large enough to customize media
The media could not be loaded. So this filter is rather large for a small tank. I have a 3 gallon that is 18” long and only 8” high. I had to modify this filter a bit big for my tank to fit. Which is why I’m giving four stars. I do not like that the motor for it is on the outside of the filter and inside the tank where the water intake valve is. With how long it already is with the motor being on the outside of the tank, it was too long for me to put the sponge filter on and the intake hose. I had to cut the sponge and put it in the intake hole on the motor so it would fit and not kill any shrimp. I did put all my own filter media in it which is why I bought this filter because it has three large compartments so you are able to put media in it. I put a sponge, filter floss, carbon and ceramic and then purigen and chemipure in there as the day before I noticed a fishy smell, cloudiness and a red slime in the tank a day after adding fish. After 12 hours of running the filter my tank is SO CLEAR. The fish and shrimp are zooming around swimming much more than before and looking very happy. I’m impressed at how clear this filter and the media made this tank and how fast. Being that I had to modify it, the flow is very slow but in a nano tank like this that’s not much of a bad thing. I do wish they offered one size smaller but with the same compartments to modify the media. Also, the first package I got was missing parts but sent a replacement right away. It is also very quiet. I would highly reccomend if you want a slim HOB filter that doesn’t look bad on a rimless aquascape. I’m sure it would be fine on rimmed tank too. The fact you can change the media is the best thing about this. Though I did have to make my own media bags (I used pantry hose by cutting and tying it) so they’d fit in the compartments, I was not expecting everything to fit but it did. Again I wish they offered a 5 gallon option just for these small nano tanks and I wish the motor was inside the filter rather than inside the tank. Other than those few things the filter is pretty cool especially for the price. also, you can fit a small or nano heater in one of the compartments which is great for aquascaping. All in all nice heater, it is a bit large and long for the smaller tanks though. Long and skinny verses shorter and thicker. Big seller is the fact I can fit a heater into the compartments. I have the s10 on my small 3 gallon and the s15 on my ten gallon.

2 years and still going strong. The different chambers are great for adding your own preferred media
I love the different chambers for filter media. Easy to clean and is made well. I’m making this review a couple years after receiving it and it’s still going strong. I don’t use the premade cartridges because I prefer choosing my own so that it works better.

Solid, quiet, self priming
Love this sucker. HOB is perfect. Filled left side with my preseed lava rock and center/right with batting. Love that it jump starts itself in the event of power outage. Quiet, minimal hum. Love range of flow adjuster. Slight vibration from the lid. Easily fixed with a little batting hanging over to better secure. Literally a non issue. I'd put it up there with fluval. Let see how long it lasts. Will update when the time comes.

Works
I went from an in the tank filter to this hang on the back … my aquarium is small 5 gallons so it’s nice not to have a filter taking up space inside … its quite.. the water is clear..the flow is adjustable I like that…also I have a small UV light that runs a few hours a day it was always a hassle on where to put it.. its fits nicely in the filter under the intake tube .. only been a few weeks .. if I can re- review in a few months to assess the long-term quality .. I will ..so far happy
