Hi it's my understanding that they are MDF mine is in my art studio and it's holding an extremely heavy load and the frame or shell seems to have an extremely robust construction and I'm extremely happy with it. A note of caution the baskets aren't so robust but they rest on solid shelves and I support the bottoms of the baskets when I pull them out. Light loads like shoes or towels wouldn't be a problem. I hope this helps.
