The Jurys still out on sound quality. But I didn't expect a studio mic.
So, it still picks up a lot of sounds from behind the mic, like from behind me! That is a little disappointing but it is a huge improvement over the built in microphone on my Sony AX43A Handycam.®The difference between gun and zoom is also not really distinct but maybe the zoom is crisper. But for taking videos of my son at the zoo and finally being able to hear what he is saying well that is worth it to me! So, I am being fair and giving it 4 stars because it does do what I need it to but not as well as Sonys advertising video for the Sony AX43A Handycam® made it sound and got me to buy it! In their video almost all background noise was eliminated well it's not that good!

Great basic mic, y all the bad reviews?
Look its not a professional mic. But as far as a basic mic on a camera it works great it records my voice behind the camera, and I've recorded kids voice over 100ft away if aimed properly. Now I'm not saying its mind blowing audio but it works fine. Good enough for youtube. Also fits my sony fx3 camera. I use it FOR NOW, instead of the xlr handle, because the xlr handle draws to much attention in public. And its youtube folks, not national geographic.

Works good .... I think?
I bought this microphone to use on the Sony HDR-CX675 camera. It connects to the camera very easily. The switch has a the following settings, off, zoom, gun. When I turn to zoom or gun it does not have anything (a light?) telling me it is on. The camera does not tell me it is on or working? Unless I am missing a ikon or light on the screen (that is very small). I have have used it a few times and I think it is working? The sound is fine but I really don't have a side by side comparison. Will keep it and would probably buy again but gave it 4 stars due to the on/off issue. Maybe someone will tell me if I am missing something. thx

Plug-and-play baby
So I bought this yesterday and I almost returned it before I received it due to some of the reviews. I just want to say that when I got this microphone I attached it to my Sony a6000 and it worked right away. The quality improvement over the microphone built into the camera is like four times better. The tintieness of the microphone is gone and is now very clear. I'm actually about to film a cat shelter video using a Sony a6000 in this microphone. I am please with my product, thank you.

Doesn't really improve recording on Sony RX100 ii
I used the mic on my Sony RX100 ii to try and improve on the quality of the recording sound. I did a trial on this mic and the built in mic. After quite a bit of recording, I could not see any difference in the recorded audio. After my test, I am begining to wonder if it is supported on my camera. I ended up returning the mic. Perhaps a higher quality mic would work better.

Does what I need it to do!
Sound quality is good, works easy with Sony cameras, but would say there is better shotgun mics out there but since this is the only that works with my current I can’t complain. Does what I need it to and always can edit the audio later.

So Good
I got this mic and have been using it for at least 2 months and it's almost too good. I rarely have to worry about sound quality with this and the windscreen that comes with the package works well enough. It's not as directional as I'd like it to be, but it does an amazing job at picking up all sounds in any direction from the microphone.

This mic sucks,
I received the mic a couple of days ago and my new A6000 yesterday. Most of the afternoon, yesterday and today, I have been testing it and to be honest, I am pissed. I read a lot of reviews, read all of the comments and am more confused now then ever. Some users say it doesn't work with their A6000 others say "rejoice" I just say...well I can't say it here.I can hear no discernible difference between the camera mic, the zoom mode and the gun mode. I did tests outside in my back yard complete with a light breeze, cars driving by and an airplane. No improvement over the internal mic. I shot tests at the wide end of the zoom and the tight end. No difference. I then shot the same tests inside and no improvement over the internal mic.All the descriptions talk about the zoom mode and the gun mode, yet when you switch to zoom you get a message on the display that the mic is not compatible with the camera. Other users say it works in gun mode but zoom is disabled but still works as in gun mode.Sony, you have lead the way for decades in audio technology and this is a real slap in the face. You are trying to force the public into buying your mics (which I don't mind) but they don't work. You could have been a rock star just by putting in a mic jack. I am sending the mic back and now I am sorry I bought the camera.
