Elaine May crafted a gangster film like no other in the nocturnal odyssey Mikey and Nicky, capitalizing on the chemistry between frequent collaborators John Cassavetes and Peter Falk by putting them on-screen together as small-time mobsters whose lifelong relationship has turned sour. Set over the course of one night, this restless drama finds Nicky holed up in a motel after the boss he stole money from puts a hit on him. Terrified, he calls on Mikey: the one person he thinks can save him. Scripted to match the live-wire energy of it's stars-alongside supporting players Ned Beatty, Joyce Van Patten, and Carol Grace-and inspired by real-life characters from May's childhood, this unbridled portrait of male friendship turned tragic is an unsung masterpiece of American cinema.

Great movie bad quality DVD
I stumbled upon this movie on the criterion channel and I could not believe I had not heard of this film before. Unbelievable performances in a gritty one of a kind drama that keeps you in real agony throughout. My only complaint has to do with the quality of the DVD which was brand new and stopped playing in the middle of the movie as if it was scratched. It resumed in a few seconds but this is unacceptable for the price. The DVD is made in Mexico

Eccentric Pleasure
This is a one-of-a-kind film and probably has a very limited audience of fans. I love spending time watching these actors do their thing and they are perfection in this production. I'm also a fan of Elaine May's direction. I suspect you'll either love it or hate it.

Cassavettes and Falk at their Best!
This movie was written with very little story or plot line but Cassavettes and Falk carry it into new dementions. A simple story with complex and intriqing characterss. Superb performances by two exceptional actors. Definitely one of my favorite Cassavettes films.
